Purpose:
To build collaborative support for refugee students and to assess which best practices in supporting refugee students are in place at George Mason University.
Since its inception, the working group have grown to include stakeholders within and outside of The University to streamline efforts and initiatives supporting the inclusion, success, and well-being of students from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds.
Accomplishments
- Development of a Student Support Coordinator role to support refugee students within the First-Gen+ Center.
- Establishment of No Lost Generation @ Mason, Registered Student Organization whose mission is to promote awareness about refugee resettlement and the inclusion and success of people from displaced backgrounds.
- The University was selected to host a training through the Every Campus A Refuge (ECAR) initiative in June 2023. This initiative offers a train-the-trainer opportunity, free certificate-bearing program, entitled “Creating Inclusive Communities Together: Transforming Higher Education Through Refugee Integration,” to higher education champions of refugee resettlement and integration.
