Advisors (Advisor Locator)

Exploratory students who have not declared a major, as well as students who have been terminated from their major can find their advisor contact information at this website.

Academic advising within the Honors College complements advising provided by the student’s major and/or minor advisors. Students can find their Honors College advisor by visiting this site and searching by major. Honors College students with general advising questions can also send an email to hcadvise@gmu.edu.

Office Hours

Office Hours are great opportunities to connect with your professors. It can be daunting at first, however, your professor will be able to connect with you one-on-one during office hours. If you have questions on lectures, assignment, or tests, be sure to visit your professor asap to get your questions clarified before test day! Sometimes, you can also reach out to the course’s teaching assistants (TA) or graduate assistants (GTAs) for help :)! Need tips on how to navigate office hours? Click here.

In classes, you can also have teaching assistants or graduate students helping the course.

Teaching Assistants (TA): Teaching Assistants or graduating assistants help students with assignments and test reviews. Be sure to also visit their office hours or review sessions to prepare for an assignment or test!

Tutoring Service

Chemistry Tutoring Center:

  • Tutoring schedule for the semester is posted on the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department Website. You can also reach out to your professors to see if they have an updated schedule of the tutors when the semester starts!

Communication Center

    • The Communication Center is located in the Gateway Library, room 134I, and the operating hours are M-F, 10:00-5:00 pm.
    • Primarily, the Communication Center is service offered to the Comm 100/101 students. For these students, they can use the following website address to make appointments: https://commcenter.as.me/schedule.php
    • For students who are not in Comm 100/101, the Communication Center is open for walk-in appointments. These walk-ins are available on a first come, first served basis and only if the coaches are not already scheduled with a Comm 100/101 student.
    • Students may come in and receive coaching on public speaking, outlining, research, presentation aids, group work, interviewing, record presentations, and other basic communication skills. They also have a Facebook page called GMU Communication Center where students can make appointments and ask questions.

Information Technology

  • Some tips:
    • First, and most importantly, stay in contact with the instructor of the course. They are there to help you.
    • If there is a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) assigned to the course, reach out to them. They are also there to help you.
    • Seek out a peer mentor from GMU STARS Alliance Organization, which offers tutoring in a number of IT courses.
    • Seek out a tutor from VSE

The Writing Center

The Writing Center offers free writing support to Mason students. They provide individual tutoring on the Fairfax and Arlington campuses. Tutors are undergraduate and graduate students who work with writers through all stages of the writing process.

To make an appointment, visit their web site at writingcenter.gmu.edu, create an account, and log on to the online scheduler. Please take some time to become acquainted with their policies, too.

Study Abroad – Global Education Office

Mason has many study abroad programs for winter break, spring break, and summer break. There are internships abroad and a Mason campus in South Korea! To find more information about various programs, visit the study abroad website!

If you plan on using scholarships or federal grants for your study abroad trip, please meet with your financial aid advisor to discuss the process and how it will affect the grants for the academic year.

The study abroad office also has scholarships students can apply to, be sure to reach out to the office for available scholarships.
