Student Health Services at GMU

Student Health Services provides accessible and affordable health care services for currently enrolled Mason students in a caring and confidential environment. Some of the services include diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury, immunizations, and prescriptions

There is no charge to be seen by one of the healthcare providers. However, there are fees for lab tests, immunizations, medications, supplies, physical exams, procedures, and some services.

Medical Insurance

George Mason University makes health insurance available to eligible students through Aetna Student Health. The Student Health Insurance Plan has been developed especially for Mason students, however, individual students might benefit from other policies. The plan provides coverage for illnesses and injuries locally and when you travel either domestically or abroad and is accepted by many local healthcare providers.

 

Vision Plan

The vision plan is included in the student health insurance plan purchase. No separate purchase or enrollment is necessary.

 

Dental Insurance Plan

Domestic & international students can enroll online through the Aetna Student Health website during fall and spring open enrollment. Read the FAQs for more information about the dental insurance plan.

Immunization Records

Submitting your immunizations records to Student Health Services at Mason is a requirement of all Mason students. Please take the following steps to submit your records:

 

  1. Collect your immunization records: Contact your parent/guardian, a healthcare provider who administered your vaccines, military service branch, a previous U.S. high school or 4-year
  2. All students are required to download the Immunization Record Form. Students must complete Parts 1-4. A healthcare professional must fill out Parts 6-8 for students born after December 31, 1956. If indicated, Part 5 must be filled out by a healthcare professional, regardless of student date of birth.
  3. Attach supporting documentation to the Immunization Record form and submit to the Immunization office in one of three ways:
  4. Upload to the online patient portal (preferred method, you can check the status of your submission)
  5. Mail to: Immunization Office, 4400 University Drive, MS 2D3, Fairfax, VA 22030
  6. Submit in-person or drop-off to SUB 1, Room 2347

Flu shots

$30 Students. Pay fees online through the Mason Marketplace.

Students with the university Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan can get their flu shot for FREE at any Student Health Services clinic; the insurance covers the cost of the flu vaccination at an in-network provider.

Students with other health insurance: contact your health insurance provider before getting your flu shot with Student Health Services. They do not bill health insurance. Students self-pay, then can submit a statement to their insurance plan. Statements available in the Patient Portal. Student Health cannot guarantee coverage or payment by your insurance company.

Student Health Services offers a variety of services to help students maintain their sexual health:

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Counseling and Psychological Services provides short-term mental health services for enrolled students. Services are free and confidential. Hence, it will not be part of your academic record. CAPS provides individual counseling, group counseling, workshops and outreach programs — experiences to enhance a student’s academic performance.

In order to begin services with CAPS, please call CAPS at 703-993-2380:

  • Call Monday through Friday (12:00pm to 3:00pm) for an initial check in with a counselor and to schedule an appointment.
  • If you are experiencing a crisis on a Monday through Friday between 11:00am and 4:30pm, please call us at 703-993-2380 to speak with a crisis counselor and determine how best to support your needs. Please visit https://caps.gmu.edu/crisis-consultation/for more information.

For mental health crises when CAPS is closed, please call CAPS at 703-993-2380 and select option 1, to connect with an after-hours crisis counselor.

 

For emergencies, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

CAPS also have various workshops throughout the semester on topics such as anxiety management, depression management, and racial trauma series. Be sure to check out the office’s workshops each month!
